Health cover
Some services are free to New Zealanders but not to
international visitors or workers on temporary work permits.
Personal health insurance can cover the cost for healthcare not
provided by the government and insurance may not cover pre-existing
medical conditions. To be considered a New Zealand resident for
healthcare purposes you must have been, intend to remain in New
Zealand for two years or more and have completed the health
requirements of the different visa categories.
Registration with Medical Council of New
Zealand
New Zealand's Medical Council offers different levels of
registration for different primary degrees and post-graduate
qualifications. For the latest rules and regulations visit Medical

As a broad overview if you are a junior doctor from UK or
Ireland
- Graduated with a UK or Irish University medical degree, have
one years' post graduate experience and full registration with the
GMC or IMC then you are likely to be eligible for provisional
general registration
Or if you are a junior doctor from a comparable health
system
- Achieved or exempt from IELTS with overall band score of
7.5
- Primary medical degree listed in WHO World Directory of medical
schools or ECFMG FAIMER Directory
- Have relevant and comparable experience for at least 30 hours
per week, for 36 of the last 48 months in Australia, Austria,
Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong,
Iceland, Italy, Norway, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland,
the Netherlands, UK or USA
- Have full registration or equivalent in that health system
Then it is likely you will be eligible for provisional general
registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
The process of registration in New Zealand is relatively
straight forward and is normally completed with in 20 working days.

Specialists/Consultants
Senior Doctors who have completed their specialist training
overseas may be eligible to apply for direct provisional vocational
registration - this can often take 6 months to complete.
If you are considering a shorter term locum role you may be
eligible to apply for registration through a special purpose scope.
