New Zealand
Why New Zealand? Questions and Answers……
Doctors are choosing to come to NZ for less hours, better pay,
excellent training opportunities and career prospects and a unique
lifestyle.
As a couple both pursuing your medical career and training you
can live in the same city and not be worried that one of you will
be sent to the other end of England for training!
NZ is already recognised as a great training place for
international doctors with over 30% of our existing registered
doctors having completed their base medical degrees off shore and
many of them choosing to stay permanently as New Zealand continues
to offer a wonderful balance between lifestyle and cost of
living.
Recent quality of life surveys consistently highlight New
Zealand as one of the world's best places to live so isn't it time
for you to join them?
Just a few things to think about…..
Will it cost me anything to go through Geneva

- No, our service to you is totally free
Why use a recruitment agency?
- You can choose to "do it yourself" and try and source a
position directly however more and more doctors are choosing to use
a reputable recruitment agency to take the hard work out of finding
the right job in the right location and more and choosing Geneva
Doctors.
- We know how busy your day to day working lives are and so by
discussing your career aims and lifestyle needs with your dedicated
Geneva recruitment consultant we can send you the most relevant
hospital information and locations for your consideration.
- By working with us you can also know that your referees are
only contacted once without being inundated with requests from many
hospitals or other agencies.
- We are not into gimmicks and giveaways as we believe our
professional service stands us apart from others - although that's
not to say we don't value your commitment to us with a unique
arrival gift when we meet you here in NZ - a few things to help you
settle in to our world.
What salary can I expect? And what tax do I
pay?
- All of the public hospitals in New Zealand have negotiated
collective agreements with the professional's organisations
representing junior and senior doctors - the MECA agreements.

you directly. Click here.
- For House Officers, SHOs and Registrars the hours of work are
normally 40 hours per week with higher run hours being reimbursed
appropriately. Salaries range therefore from around $55,000 through
to $170,000 plus dependent on years of experience and run
hours.
- For Senior Medical Officers the base salaries range from
$130,000 to $190,000+ however this does not include any call back
or availability allowances, or CME.
- As the cost of living is so very different in New Zealand it is
best to not make a direct comparison with your existing salary as
doctors in NZ do enjoy an excellent quality of life on these salary
scales.
- New Zealand's tax year runs from 1 April to 31 March. Taxation
is fairly straightforward in New Zealand though we recommend
consulting an expert in NZ taxation if you have detailed
questions.
Income Taxed at;
- Up to $48,000 21% + 1.7% ACC levy
- $48,001 to $70,000 33% + 1.7% ACC levy
- $70,001 and over 38% + 1.7% ACC levy
Do I have to come for a minimum period of
time?
- The majority of hospitals do require a commitment of at least 6
months or ideally 12 months in the first instance as this gives you
a much better chance to integrate into the New Zealand health
system - if you decide to stay longer then this is normally always
well received!
