Professional Registration
New Zealand Registration for Health
Professionals
The process for applying for your professional
registration in New Zealand will take
approximately four to six
months. This is dependent on how quickly you return
all the necessary paperwork to the appropriate Council. In
addition to the cost of Registration indicated under each
discipline there are also associated costs in obtaining the
required documents to support your registration application.
Nursing Council of New Zealand
All internationally qualified Registered
Nurses, including those from English speaking countries will
be required to complete an English language assessment for New
Zealand.
You can do the Occupational English Test (OET) and pass
with a score of B in each section www.occupationalenglishtest.org. We
recommend this test to candidates for whom English is their second
language as it is nursing based questions, and even though it costs
more, you will more likely pass this.
You could also sit the International English Language
Testing System exam (IELTS) Academic test and
achieve an overall pass rate of no less than 7 and no less than 7
in each band www.ielts.org. We recommend this
test to native English speakers, as it is a comprehensive
test, with very obscure questions.
We recommend you practice for this test as many English speaking
nurses fail due to time constraints. You can do practice
tests online free of charge:
More information on IELTs can be found on this
article and in these frequently asked
questions.
If you have Nursing Registration in an Australian State you can
apply for Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition which is a quick process
and costs $295. Application forms can be downloaded off the
New Zealand Nursing Council website here.
The New Zealand Nursing Council, require you to get copies of
your documents certified so that they can be sure that the copy
they receive has not been altered in any way from the
original. This is normally done by a solicitor or a notary
public. When documents are certified/notarised the must adhere to
the following criteria. If this criteria is not followed the
nursing board will reject your application. Please print out a copy
of this document and take it to your solicitor/notary public so
that they can fulfill the certification criteria.
- All documents must be certified on the same side that the
document is copied on, or certified on both sides if the copy is
double sided
- It must state that this is a true copy of the original
- It must be signed with the personal signature of the certifying
solicitor/notary public
- The solicitor/notary public's name must be printed under the
signature
- The person's title e.g Solicitor or Notary Public must be
printed under the name
- The company name, address and telephone number must printed or
stamped under the person's title
- It must be dated
If any of these criteria are left out the board will reject your
application causing unnecessary delays in processing your
registration.
